Let's get this going. Be a voice for an area that has no voice
# 4: Sep 30, 2007, Daniel Singer, California
Please do not open up the Bahuaja-Sonene National Park to commercial
exploration and exploitation. The value of this undisturbed natural resource
cannot be overestimated. Sincerely, Dan Singer
# 3: Sep 30, 2007, Manuel Plenge, Peru
The present limits of the park should be respected. The biodiversity
that exists here is known worldwide and should be protected as originaly
planned. Peru would have a negative evaluation from other governments,
international and local institutions. Benefits from tourism, etc. should
not be ignored
# 12: Sep 30, 2007, Julie Shapiro, Massachusetts
I was in Tambopata this summer and it is an amazing place that needs
to be protected. Not only is it beautiful, but unique in terms of biodiversity
and should not be subjected to this short-term, damaging exploitation.
#18: Sep 30, 2007, Anonymous, Puerto Rico
I was in Tambopata this last february and watching the macaw clay
lick activity has been the most amazing experience in my life. Tambopata
HAS TO BE PROTECTED so others can enjoy the beauty of nature and life.
Don't let greed and stupidity kill our forests!
# 27: Sep 30, 2007, Julie Blumenthal, California
Protect Peru's growing ecotourist industry. Please do not give up
precious sites for temporary oil and gas which will soon be unecessary
as developed nations already use alternative energy! Do not sink Peru
into a dark age. Peru's excellent and legendary environment is your greatest
asset. Many folk have seen our photographs of Tambopata, and all are concerned
about preserving this area.
# 36: Sep 30, 2007, Amanda Giracca, Michigan
This proposal is atrocious and heartbreaking. What sort of world do
we live in that we can create boundaries of sanctuary and then turn around
and destroy them? How utterly foolish to even dream of threatening this
stronghold of wildlife, one of the richest and biodiverse regions in the
world.
# 46: Sep 30, 2007, Jhin pierr Solis muramatsu, Peru
it`s difficult to belive that the paeruvian goberment try to kill
one of the most beautiful area..we have to protect all the wildlife and
the green area candamo is a wonder place.....we have to look after it...
# 52: Sep 30, 2007, Renata Leite Pitman, Peru
Any one who knows the region will be terrified with this news. It
is part of the largest, most pristine bock of protected areas in the entire
Amazon. Paving the Interoceanic Highway it is already a huge impact. Then,
the predictable plans for the Madeira Dam and wildfires. It seems the
situation couldn't became worse. But it did. If we close our eyes, in
10 years from now, we will loose all that makes Southeastern Peru one
of the most incredible place in the world: several populations of indigenous
in voluntary isolation, its amazing biodiversity, the number and size
of protected areas, which represents one of the last spots possible for
large scale conservation in the Amazon. If we don't stand up against terrible
threat now, who will do it?
# 56: Sep 30, 2007, Daniel Herriges, Minnesota
I was in Tambopata doing anthropological research in summer 2006.
This beautiful area has incredible biodiversity, and ecotourism is showing
great promise in providing a livelihood for local people that safeguards
the region's natural heritage. The track record of oil companies in the
Amazon suggests that they will not respect human rights or environmental
quality, and local people will see little to no economic benefit. Keep
them out!

History has never lauded the people who let irreplaceable resources
be destroyed. Repeatedly history and countless citizens of the world have
honored the people who preserved these special places. Peru must stick
with its original intent in establishing this magnificent park.
# 103: Sep 30, 2007, Gabriel Wilson, California
Granting oil concessions is a destructive form of capitalism. Supporting
ecologically friendly ecotourism is a potential model of creating a constructive
form of capitalism that: (1) aids the community of indigenous people and
local communities (2) conserves the wonderful wildlife of the Amazonian
Rainforest (3) generates a profit. All three of these goals can be accomplished
without hindering the other. The conservation of the Amazon does not start
in the Amazon, but in you.
# 109: Sep 30, 2007, Elisabeth Shaw, United Kingdom
This is one of the most beautiful and diverse areas on the planet,
I can't believe the peruvian government would even consider letting this
happen to it. If nothing else, it could threaten the ecotourism industry
in the area, on which so much of the local economy depends
# 113: Sep 30, 2007, Luis Alza, Peru
# 124: Sep 30, 2007, Matthew Champoux, California
After spending the summer in the Tambopata studying bird biodiversity
in the region and being graciously supported by the Rainforest Expeditions
ecotourism company, I can safely say that the vast and briliant majesty
of the Bahuaja Sonene and the Tambopata-Candamo Reserved zone should be
treasured as some of the greatest natural wonders of the world. If this
place is not given the projection that it deserves, our future kin will
surely speak slander and feel a deep regret for the ignorance in exploiting
this place, a region of timeless value, for temporary profits.
# 126: Sep 30, 2007, Anonymous, Florida
This area is among the most biodiverse in the world and the legislation
in question would go into effect without local peoples being informed
about the consequences. That is unacceptable for Peru and for the parks
now imperiled.
# 135: Sep 30, 2007, Emily Hockman, Wisconsin
I spent four months at the Tambopata Research Center two years ago.
It was an amazing time, and I am devastated to think that areas even more
wild than that would be destroyed for oil. There's so few places left
in the world, why destroy one more??
# 141: Sep 30, 2007, Rachel Del Rio, California
I had the opportunity to volunteer near this area, and I know how
precious it is with it's most spectacular biodiversity, arguably in all
of the world . It would be such a shame, not only for the multitude of
species that live there, or the lucky few who get to conduct research
there, but also for the country of Peru if this sacred sanctuary for wildlife
was reduced by over 19%. It deeply saddens me that this is even a consideration.
I really hope that these large oil companies will not get their way.
# 155: Sep 30, 2007, Stephen Frankham, United Kingdom
To allow Tambopata Candamo to be developed to oil would be to sentence
one of the worlds most magnificent and valuable, conservation areas to
a slow and painful death. No financial benefit would be equal to such
a loss, and bearing in mind the recent disaster of the Camisea Natural
Gas Project, oil development should be avoided at all costs! Yours sincerely,
Steve Frankham UK

...Everybody has to learn to plan ahead and if the Bahuaja-Sonene National
Park is carved up by YOU big oil company men, then you will have failed
to realise that we're all supposed to take responsibility for this environment.
You don't get off without facing the consequences of your actions. Get

We are tire of politics giving their backs to wildlife and rational
use of natural resources. Lawyers souldn't conduct any nation, instead
they should go back to scool and take basic classes of biology, natural
resources and, ofcourse, morality.
# 185: Sep 30, 2007, Anna Trugman, New Mexico
The carbon emissions from oil are destroying our planet and now we
are going to massacre the habitat of beautiful and endangered animals
so that we can continue destroying our planet? We do not have the right
to sentence other creatures to death. With the industrial power we posses
along comes the responsibility to use this power for good. Candamo is
a treasure and must be treated as such.
# 196: Sep 30, 2007, Daniel Foster, New York

we need to defend what little of our precious environment we have
left. What is the point of oil or profits for these grossly greedy companies
if we destroy the very earth we live on. What really is more impoprtant,
profit for these companies, oil, or the conservation of our planet! To
me there is no question. Someone has to stop them, they must not be allowed
to get away with whatever they want too!!
#308: Oct 1, 2007, Martin Nicholas, United Kingdom
The Tambopata / Candamo region is globally so important, ecologically
speaking. I urge the oil companies to work WITH not against conservationists
and indigenous people to find a way forward.
# 314: Oct 1, 2007, Heike Lutermann, South Africa
The Tambopata / Candamo region is one of the treasures of Peru and
should be preserved for the people of the country as it belongs to them.
While doing this it will also allow invaluable animals and plants to survive
and to be preserved for the future. Instead of short-term large returns
the government should rather be interested in a long-term sustainable
use of such a resource.
# 330: Oct 1, 2007, Bridget Ringdahl, South Africa
I find these kinds developments amazing, especially in light of the
climate change phenomenum which is well and truelly upon us, not to mention
the absolute insanity of reducing Amazonian forest even further - the
life lung of our planet. Value (which far exceeds the price of oil, diamonds
- the ecological value is priceless and our survival depends on that)has
to be given to the preservation of these Candamo forests if we are to
protect them from unscrupulous oil diggers.
# 336: Oct 1, 2007, Christopher Rootes, United Kingdom
The Bahuaja-Sonene National Park is a priceless global asset, and
its bidiversity is unrivalled. To reduce its size, or to permit environmentally
damaging activities within its borders, would permanently damage our natural
heritage and diminish Peru's stature in the eyes of the world. In time
even the economic benefits of preserving the Park will outweigh any possible
revenues from its exploitation for oil and minerals.
# 338: Oct 1, 2007, Sean Strydom, South Africa

# 350: Oct 1, 2007, Elizabeth Raine, United Kingdom
People are desperate for food and money, satisfying their needs, which
we all do, but we have to have a long term sustainable plan, - the long
term effects of this type of uncontrolled gold rush for Madre de Dios,
Peru, South America are disasterous. The Peruvian Government have such
a responsibility to their country; people, resources....we as human beings
also have this responsibility to our local community, country and world.
Lets all work together and not just blame others when we can take action
from wherever we are.
# 373: Oct 1, 2007, Maiken Wiinter, New York
In our rapidly changing world in which we are loosing species and
natural beauty at an unprecedentend rate, it should be everybody's moral
duty to protect natural areas such as Candamo. We are facing a global
emergency due to burning of fossil fuels - how on earth are we still able
to destroy the last natural areas for the very reason to further increase
oil comsumption? When do we people wake up and realize what we are doing
not just to nature and to our children, but to ourselves? I fear by the
time we realize it, it will be too late. Please, listen to your conscience
and heart and reconsider your planned actions

Stop oil and gas extraction in one of Peru's natural jewels. I have
been to Bahuaja-Sonene National Park and Tambopata region - don't let
energy extraction trash it with waste pits, pollution, roads, deforestation,
and increased colonization within the park. This goes against the reserves
mandate to protect nature, and its rpecedent threatens other protected
areas in Madre de Dios (Manu, Alto Purus, Tambopata ...).

I have visited your beautiful country 3 times since 2005 and see tremendous
potential for ecotourism as a source of foreign capital for Peru. If managed

the future. Don't let these companies exploit you today. Sincerely, Dr.

# 609: Oct 1, 2007, Karim Ledesma, Peru
If politicians just understand things in monetary terms, lets talk
in their language. Protected areas seem not to worth a coin now compare
to nonrenewable resources like oil, gas. However in the near future (already
happening in a very small scale) companies, organizations will have to
pay to keep forest standing; forest that can take up carbon dioxide and
reduce greenhouse effect. Each piece of standing forest then will worth
a fortune.

As thousands of other foreigners and even more Peruvians I'm fascinated
with Peru's incredible natural and cultural diversity. It's simply ABSOLUTELY
IRRESPONSIBLE to sacrifice Peru's "richness" for some lousy

by just a few national and international authorities, leaving nothing
for the Peruvian people, meanwhile worsening their children's future prospects.

Perú's biodiversity is valuable not only to peruvians but to

such diversity by reducing the size of a national park of what is now

Oil and gas are not really for Peru people now, but for the profit
of foreign countries than are earger to especulate with oil prices. Nature
and local wellfare is, by far, much more important for the years to come.

Planeta.
# 860: Oct 1, 2007, Alvaro Delboy, Peru
# 866: Oct 1, 2007, Ali Waterman, Illinois
I've been to Peru. I like Peru. I like those animals. Oil isn't as
cool. Let's keep the rainforest.

# 881: Oct 1, 2007, Heidy Cardenas, Peru

Vamos! Todos por Candamo!
# 930: Oct 1, 2007, Ian Markham, California
In a world where deforestation and extinction rates are skyrocketing,
intact natural ecosystems like Candamo bear an intrinsic value of unimagineable
magnitude. Do not allow temporary economic gains to blind you to the future
possibilities for the region.
# 938: Oct 2, 2007, Javier Rubio, Peru
# 945: Oct 2, 2007, Kurt Kutay, Washington
# 944: Oct 2, 2007, Christina Czembor, Australia
I have spend several weeks in this area and this place should not
be dimished through industrial activity or careless governing. Please
do not reduce the size of the Bahuaja-Sonene National Park.

???

This is a beatiful part of the world, don't let them spoil it.
# 990: Oct 2, 2007, Joseph Booth, United Kingdom
A few people will prosper (probably men), the rest of us and indigenous
people will more than likely be left poorer. There is no control over
this sort of exploitation when it begins. It could be the end for a stunning
part of the Peruvian rainforest act now.
# 988: Oct 2, 2007, Kat Morgenstern, New York
This proposed exploitation will only bring short term gain, but irreparable
long term damage.
# 1000: Oct 2, 2007, Anita Lichti, Germany
It is SO important for the entire world that the beautiful and invaluable
rain forests remain intact. Please do not reduce what is left of them.
Thank you.
